Good News: Lego Robots Teams: We have 2 Lego Robotics Teams at HM supported by volunteers, staff, and the PTA. At the tournament in January: Team Crazy Cosmos consisting of Petr M., Sophie E., Rohan B., Antoine A., Charlie St. D., and William D. all scored very well in their sessions and received a Project Award for their outstanding presentation of their problem and solution involving dissolvable drink packaging to help reduce trash on the Int’l Space Station. Team Outer Space Otters consisting of Mary M., Naomi G., Ezra K., Sophia M., Aislyn C., Cooper F, and Elliot A. won an award for Robot Design and a second award for Cooper and Elliot’s Top Mission scoring in their division. Their research project involved improving comfort while exercising in space. Team OSO did so well, that they were selected as 1 of 3 teams out of 53 to go on to compete at the State tournament on Feb. 23rd at Washington Magnet School. They will compete with 48 teams in the state that have advanced by performing well at other tournaments. Come on out and support the Team.
New Business:
Horace Mann PTA Purpose: The purpose of the Horace Mann School Parent Teacher Association in common with those of the National PTA and the Minnesota PTSA, are:
Horace Mann School Mission: To provide a safe, respectful school community that builds upon our tradition of high expectations for all students; nurtures the uniqueness of each child; and ensures that families are connected, informed, and involved.
Horace Mann Vision: Imagine every student making a year’s growth or more academically, socially, and emotionally. Imagine every student prepared for the next academic year, middle school, and beyond–learning how to learn and how to create achievement through effort. Imagine a supportive school community united, learning with and from each other, to achieve this vision.
Parenting Speaker-David Bredehoft scheduled for April 15th 6:30 pm at HM “Raising likeable, responsible, respectful children.” Author of How much is too much? and How much is enough? Free Family Fun Nights: Alex Kotze: We had our first free family night last week and we showed Incredibles. It was a great night and over 100 kids and their families attended. We had a great committee effort and everyone pitched in with posters, snacks, sound system, and fun. We had it in the cafeteria which worked well. Our next free family night in February 28 and we will be playing Bingo. We will have one additional family night in April and it will likely be a game night. If anyone is interested in helping with the next two events, please contact Alex at am_kotze@yahoo.com.
Silent Auction: Anne Pavlis: The 2019 Horace Mann PTA Silent & Live Auction: ‘One Small Night for Mann, One Giant Leap for Mann Kids’ This year’s Silent Auction will be here before you know it. Remember to save Friday, March 8th to attend this fun, adults-only event at Harriet Island Pavilion. We need YOU to make the event a success and support PTA funded programs at Horace Mann!
Family Volunteer Service Night: Terri Shefelbine: Friday February 22 6-8 PM We invite all Horace Mann families to attend the Voices in Our Community Family Volunteer Service Night on February 22. A FREE event for families that will have time to connect to each other and members of our community while working on service projects benefiting a wide variety of community partners. Our last planning meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday Feb. 7 6:30-8 at school, we welcome all. Watch perspectives for additional volunteer opportunities. Questions, contact Terri Shefelbineterrias@usgo.net
We are collecting supplies for two of the projects. Boxes will be located outside the office beginning Friday Feb. 1. We are looking for tee-shirts – especially adult sized – to be made into grocery bags for Keystone Community Partners food shelf. Please help us by donating your travel size (or even regular size) toiletries for women and children that need to leave their homes in a hurry to start over someplace safer. They need toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, combs, bars of soap or body wash, socks or other personal care items. Thank you for helping us help our partner CLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio).
